The chemistry term for molecules too cool to fill every bond slot.
means A measure of the double or triple bonds in a molecule — the gaps left where it chose rings or multiple bonds over bonding with as many hydrogen atoms as chemically possible.
from Built straightforwardly from 'saturate,' which traces back to Latin saturare, 'to fill completely, glut, satisfy' (kin to satis, 'enough' — the same root behind 'satisfy' and 'satiate'). Chemists borrowed 'saturated' in the 1800s for compounds packed with the maximum hydrogen a carbon skeleton could hold; 'unsaturated' simply marks the ones that stopped short, leaving double or triple bonds instead of a full hydrogen guest list. The 'un-' is just English doing its usual negating job.
- definition
- Double or triple bonds replace max hydrogen atoms
- fat tell
- More unsaturation means liquid oil, not solid fat
- test trick
- Bromine water or iodine decolorizes near double bonds
- degree formula
- Counts rings plus pi bonds in one number
