Slicing you into pictures without the mess of actually slicing you.
means An imaging technique that builds a cross-sectional picture of the inside of an object (often a body) by combining measurements taken from many angles, layer by layer.
from Built from Greek 'tomos' (a cutting, a slice) and '-graphia' (writing or recording), the same '-graphy' family as photography and geography. The 'tomos' root also gives us 'atom' — originally 'that which cannot be cut.' So tomography is literally 'slice-writing': the machine does the cutting mathematically, turning scan data into a stack of pictures instead of a stack of actual tissue.
