Left side of a ship when facing forward — red light, no R in it, easy to remember.
means The left-hand side of a ship or aircraft when you're facing toward the front (bow) of it.
from From 'larboard,' the old term for the loading side of a ship — the side docked at 'port' so cargo could be loaded, since the steering oar (on the right, or 'starboard' side) was in the way on the other. 'Larboard' and 'starboard' sounded too alike and got confused in noisy conditions, so by the 19th century the navy officially swapped in 'port,' which also happily stuck because that's the side facing the dock.
