A cactus so chill it just hands out free pizza-shaped pads to passersby.
means A prickly pear cactus — a paddle-stemmed cactus of the genus Opuntia, known for its flat, spiny, pad-like stems and edible fruit.
from From Greek *Opous* (also *Opuntia*), an ancient city in central Greece. The naturalist Tournefort borrowed the name for this cactus genus because, per Pliny, a spiny plant grew there that people could propagate just by rooting its leaves — a trick the New World cactus, unknown to the Greeks, happens to share. So the name is a hand-me-down: borrowed from a plant the Greeks actually had, and stuck onto an unrelated one that just behaved the same way.
