from A 19th-century compound stitched from the Greek 'ōkeanos' — the great encircling river the ancient Greeks imagined wrapping the edge of the world — and '-graphia,' 'writing' or 'describing.' So literally 'the describing of the ocean.' 'Ōkeanos' itself was also the name of a Titan, the god of that world-girdling water; its deeper roots are uncertain, possibly pre-Greek.
