The brain's wiring diagram, drawn by a committee that never agreed on names.
means The branch of science that maps the brain and nervous system's physical structures — which parts connect to which, and where everything sits.
from Built from Greek 'neuron' (sinew, nerve) and 'anatome' (a cutting up, dissection) — itself from 'ana-' (up, apart) plus 'temnein' (to cut). Anatomy as a discipline grew out of literal dissection, cutting bodies open to name their parts; neuroanatomy simply pointed that scalpel-and-naming tradition at the nervous system once anatomists had the tools and nerve (so to speak) to trace it in detail.
- naming chaos
- Same structure often has three different Latin names
- gray vs white
- Gray matter computes, white matter just relays
- cerebellum density
- Holds most of the brain's neurons despite being tiny
- no pain sensors
- Brain tissue itself cannot feel being cut
