the.com/message board
A group chat that never deletes your most embarrassing opinions from 2003.
means An online forum where people post messages for others to read and reply to, organized into threads by topic.
from A straightforward compound: 'message' (from Latin missus, 'sent') plus 'board,' the old sense of a flat surface for posting notices — think corkboard bulletin boards with pinned flyers. Early online forums borrowed that physical metaphor directly, calling themselves 'bulletin board systems' (BBSes) in the pre-web era, and 'message board' stuck as the web-native cousin of the same idea: a public wall where notes just stay tacked up, waiting for replies.
