Originally meant a private citizen with no political role — now just means your uncle at dinner.
means A person acting foolishly or lacking sense — stupid, or willfully ignorant, depending on how generous you're feeling.
from From Greek 'idiotes,' meaning a private person, someone who held no public office and stayed out of civic affairs — just an ordinary layman minding his own business. The Greeks, being obsessed with public life and democracy, started using it with a sneer: if you weren't involved in the polis, you were basically useless or clueless about things that mattered. Latin picked it up as 'idiota' (an ignorant person), and by the time it reached English it had shed its political meaning entirely and kept only the insult.
