the.com/garbage disposal
A motor under your sink that eats what you were too lazy to compost.
means An electric grinding unit mounted beneath a kitchen sink drain that shreds food scraps into tiny bits so they can be flushed away with water.
from 'Garbage' comes from Anglo-Norman legal and culinary vocabulary for the waste parts of a slaughtered animal — giblets, entrails, trimmings — before it widened to mean refuse in general. 'Disposal' traces back to Latin 'disponere,' to arrange or distribute, by way of French. The device itself is the newer part of the story: an American invention from the first half of the 20th century, created specifically to let households grind food waste and send it down the drain instead of into the trash, so the name is simply literal — a unit that disposes of garbage, right at the point it's created.
