from Coined in 1960 by researchers Manfred Clynes and Nathan Kline, who smashed together 'cybernetic' and 'organism' to describe a human body modified with machine parts to survive the alien environment of outer space. 'Cybernetic' itself traces back to the Greek 'kybernetes,' meaning 'steersman' or 'helmsman' — the same root that gives us 'governor' and, much later, 'cyber-' anything. So the word was built to mean, quite literally, a self-steering organism — a body with its own built-in pilot.
