The one surface in your home that judges every life decision you make on it.
means The flat, heat-and-stain-resistant work surface built on top of kitchen or bathroom cabinets, used for prep, cooking cleanup, and the quiet stacking of mail you'll deal with later.
from A straightforward compound: 'counter,' from the medieval shop counter — the table merchants used to count out coins and goods, from Latin 'computare,' to reckon — plus 'top,' simply the upper surface of something. Shops had counters for commerce; kitchens eventually got their own, for chopping onions instead of coins.
